Waste Management operates 130 Compressed Natural Gas trucks in Broward County. You likely know what our trucks look like, but what you don’t know is that our fleet of vehicles has become one of our most important – and impactful – environmental solutions.
Companywide, Waste Management’s fleet of more than 6,000 natural gas trucks is the largest truck fleet of its kind in North America. In Florida, more than 525 of our trucks are fueled by compressed natural gas saving 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel a year per truck and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 22 metric tons per vehicle. And the trucks are much quieter in our neighborhoods than diesel trucks.
CNG Fueling Station
All of our CNG vehicles need to fuel up somewhere, which is why we operate a CNG Fueling Station in Pompano Beach. But it isn’t just used for our vehicles – our station is utilized daily by public and private fleets of natural gas vehicles. That means more opportunities for reduced emissions in Broward.
In Florida, we have financed and constructed a total of 11 CNG fueling stations and invested more than $100 million in CNG trucks and fueling stations to keep our communities clean and green.
Our Monarch Hill Landfill-Gas-to-Energy plant provides power to more than 10,000 homes in Broward. As waste decomposes in a landfill, a natural by-product is landfill gas. More than 20 years ago, we realized this gas could be captured and used as fuel. We are now able to convert the gas into electricity to power our local homes and businesses.
